Ultimate Packaging manufacture high quality flexible packaging,
produced primarily for the food sector. Ultimate have invested
in a multi-million pound production facility which meets the
very highest hygiene and environmental standards. Within that
facility are state of the art 8 and 6 colour print presses,
the output from which they supply to all the major supermarkets
and blue chip food customers, producing printed bags, film
on the reel, and other related products.
Ultimate Packaging had found that operating a number
of disparate IT systems for production specifications, stock
control, accounting and warehouse management was increasingly
inefficient and was also out of synch with their culture of
innovation and forward thinking. Since investing in de
Facto S5, their new system has proved itself to be a powerful
integrated solution which meets all their exacting requirements
and has
produced multiple business benefits.
 Efficient
Production and General Data Storage
Having transferred all their data into one integrated system,
the company has indeed seen great gains in efficiency. Information
which often had to be re-keyed for each system now flows
seamlessly between S5's modules, reducing data input time, and improving
data integrity, relevancy and synchronisation.
Considerable further gains in efficiency arose out of De Facto's
implementation of their 'extra fields' feature. Working with
Ultimate, De Facto were able to define extra field tables to
store their extremely detailed product specifications. Previously,
variations in such things as date codes or packer codes led
to a massive proliferation of Bills
of Materials.
In S5 however, this information is stored in user
defined variables,
with consequent gains in efficiency. The base description is
stored once, and all the possible variations are kept within
that same Bill of Materials. Again, all the highly detailed
production documentation is printed out directly from S5.
Advanced
Warehouse Management Facilities
| Prior to implementing S5, Ultimate
managed their warehouse using a proprietary IT system which
wasn't integrated with their other business systems. In
contrast, with S5 warehouse
management is fully integrated
with all their
other processes and functionality. Pallet tracking is enabled
via pallet number, and all movements of pallets are processed
using handheld devices. Pallet movements can be scheduled
within S5 and appropriate instructions are produced for
the forklift drivers. |

Works orders are linked to pallet movements and the movement
of raw materials to the print machines and then back again to
storage after the production process is all controlled by de
Facto S5.
Hand helds are
used to generate pallet moves using simple scans of bar codes
on the pallet and on the storage rack.
Effective
Production Management and Quick Processes

The various stages of the production
process are handled efficiently by de Facto S5. For
a particular production run, the various raw materials
necessary are allocated. Individual pallets containing
those pallets are called to the print or conversion machines
as required.
When each finished product pallet comes off production,
various production quick processes are carried out on hand
held devices. For example, quantities are recorded, and
the location for storing the pallet is established, and
the system generates a new pallet number. |
The system downdates the raw materials, and updates finished
products, whilst recording factors such as Scrap and Process
Yields. Pallet labels are generated by S5 prior to the pallet
going for despatch. Powerful
Production, Financials and Logistics for Manufacturing Operations
Ultimate Packaging utilise their own and third party contracts
for transport of
their products. All aspects of distribution and Logistics are
handled within S5, and tightly integrated with the control of
both their Stock and
of their Financials.
